How is BAföG calculated?

BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act) supports students who cannot fully finance their education on their own. Den amount depends on your needs, living situation, and your parents' income.

Basic Need 2025

Den basic rate for students at universities and technical colleges.

Housing Bidrag

+ 380 Euro

If you are not living with your parents, you receive an additional housing allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions about BAföG (German Student Aid)

Vem is eligible for BAföG?▲
BAföG is available to students who meet the eligibility requirements: German citizenship (or equivalent), financial need (based on parental and own income), and enrollment at a recognised institution.
Hur mycket BAföG will I receive?▲
Den maximum rate is €992 per månad (from winter semester 2024/25 for students not living with their parents). It consists of a basic allowance plus a housing cost allowance.
Do I have to repay BAföG?▲
50% of BAföG is an interest-free loan that must be repaid — but up to a maximum of €10,010 total. Den remaining 50% is a non-repayable grant.
Does student job income affect BAföG?▲
Yes, your own income is counted toward BAföG. However, there is an exemption of €520 per månad (€6,240/year). Inkomst above this reduces the BAföG entitlement.
How long can I receive BAföG?▲
BAföG is granted for the standard study period plus one semester. If you exceed this, you may need to provide proof of academic progress. Special rules apply for changes of subject.
