Part-Time Work: How Does It Affect Your Net Salary?

Switching from full-time to part-time means less gross salary, but thanks to Germany's progressive tax system, your net often decreases proportionally less than your hours. Your effective hourly rate can actually increase.

The Progressive Tax Advantage

With a lower gross salary, you fall into a lower tax bracket. This means a smaller percentage of your income goes to taxes, effectively increasing your net hourly wage.

Social Security Impact

Social security contributions decrease proportionally with your gross salary. However, keep in mind that lower contributions also mean lower future pension entitlements.

Vacation Entitlement in Part-Time

Your vacation days are adjusted based on the number of working days per week, not hours per day. If you work 3 days per week instead of 5, your 30 vacation days become 18 - but you still get the same total time off.

Frequently Asked Questions about Part-Time Work

Do I have a right to work part-time in Germany?
Yes. Employees in companies with more than 15 employees have a legal right to part-time work after 6 months of employment (§ 8 TzBfG), unless there are compelling operational reasons against it.
How is part-time salary calculated?
Part-time salary is calculated proportionally: Full-time salary × (Part-time hours / Full-time hours). Working 30 instead of 40 hours gives you 75% of the full-time salary.
What is Brückenteilzeit (bridge part-time)?
Brückenteilzeit (§ 9a TzBfG) allows employees to work part-time for 1 to 5 years and then automatically return to full-time. Applies to companies with 45+ employees.
How much holiday do I get working part-time?
The legal minimum is 4 weeks per year, regardless of hours. However, the number of holiday days is calculated proportionally based on working days per week.
Does part-time work affect my pension?
Yes. Fewer hours mean fewer pension points. Working 50% part-time earns only 50% of the earnings points per year, resulting in a proportionally lower pension.
