Parental Allowance: Basic Parental Allowance & ElterngeldPlus

Parental allowance supports parents financially after the birth of a child. It replaces the lost income and amounts to 65-67% of the previous net income (min. 300 euros, max. 1,800 euros per month).

Basic Parental Allowance

  • 65-67% of previous net income
  • Paid for up to 12 months (14 months with partner months)

ElterngeldPlus

ElterngeldPlus is half the amount of basic parental allowance but is paid for twice as long (up to 24 months). Ideal if you want to return to part-time work during parental leave.

Special Rules for Low Income

For income below 1,240 euros net per month, the replacement rate increases gradually up to 100%. The minimum amount is always 300 euros (basic) or 150 euros (ElterngeldPlus) per month.

How long can I receive parental allowance?▲

What is the difference between basic Elterngeld and ElterngeldPlus?▲
Basic Elterngeld is paid in full for up to 14 months. ElterngeldPlus is half as much but twice as long – ideal for part-time work during parental leave.
Is parental allowance taxable?▲
Parental allowance itself is tax-free, but subject to progression. This means it may increase your tax rate on other income in the same year.
Can I receive parental allowance and child benefit at the same time?▲
Yes, parental allowance (Elterngeld) and child benefit (Kindergeld) can be received simultaneously. They do not exclude each other.
