Car Insurance Comparison: How Much Can You Really Save?

Car Insurance Comparison: How Much Can You Really Save?

Auf einen Blick

Save up to 850 Euros per year by switching your car insurance in Germany. Find out what to look for in tariffs, coverage levels, and deductibles.

Why Is an Annual Car Insurance Comparison in Germany Worth It?

Car insurance costs are among the largest annual expenses for vehicle owners in Germany. However, many drivers pay hundreds of euros too much year after year simply because they let their contracts renew out of habit. Experience shows that switching your car insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) can yield an annual saving of up to 850 Euros.

Since insurance companies release new tariffs every year and price competition in the industry is intense, doing a comparison is highly recommended – especially in autumn before the classic cancellation deadline on November 30th (Stichtag), but also when changing vehicles or after a premium increase during the year.

What Are the Different Car Insurance Tiers in Germany?

Before comparing, you should understand which type of insurance is best suited for your vehicle. German car insurance is divided into three tiers:

What Does the Mandatory Car Liability Insurance (Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung) Cover?

Car liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung) is strictly required by German law. Without it, no vehicle can be registered or driven on public roads. It covers damage that you cause with your car to other people, vehicles, or property. Damage to your own vehicle is not covered under this basic tier.

When Are Partial Coverage (Teilkasko) and Full Coverage (Vollkasko) Useful?

  • Partial Coverage (Teilkasko): Protects against theft, fire, glass breakage, accidents with wild animals (Wildunfälle), marten bites (Marderbisse), and natural hazards like hail or storms. It is usually recommended for vehicles between 5 and 10 years old.
  • Full Coverage (Vollkasko): Includes all benefits of Teilkasko and additionally covers damage to your own car from accidents caused by yourself, vandalism, or hit-and-run incidents where the perpetrator is unknown. Highly recommended for new cars, leased vehicles (Leasingfahrzeuge), and valuable used cars.

Which Factors Determine Your German Car Insurance Premium?

Insurance premiums in Germany are calculated based on statistical risk factors. The most important parameters include:

  • No-Claims Class (Schadensfreiheitsklasse / SF-Klasse): The more years you drive without causing an accident, the higher your discount (SF-Klasse) and the lower your monthly premium.
  • Regional and Type Class (Regional- und Typklasse): The regional class reflects the accident statistics of your registration district. The type class is determined by the accident frequency of your exact vehicle model.
  • List of Drivers (Fahrerkreis): If only you drive the car, the premium is significantly lower than if multiple drivers or young drivers under 25 are insured.
  • Annual Mileage (Jährliche Fahrleistung): Low-mileage drivers benefit from significantly lower premiums than frequent drivers.

Example Calculation: How Much Can You Save by Switching Car Insurance?

The following table illustrates the potential savings for different coverage levels on an average mid-range car, assuming no-claims class 10 (SF 10):

Insurance Coverage Average Premium (Old Tariff) Cheap Comparison Tariff Savings per Year
Liability Only (Haftpflicht SF 10) approx. 340 € approx. 210 € approx. 130 €
Partial Coverage (Teilkasko SF 10, 150 € deductible) approx. 490 € approx. 310 € approx. 180 €
Full Coverage (Vollkasko SF 10, 300/150 € deductible) approx. 820 € approx. 490 € approx. 330 €

Values are estimates based on average profiles in 2026. Your actual premium will be calculated individually.

What Common Mistakes Should You Avoid When Switching Insurance?

To avoid unpleasant surprises in the event of damage, pay attention to the following points:

  1. Choosing Coverage Limits That Are Too Low: Always choose tariffs with a lump-sum coverage (Deckungssumme) of 100 million Euros, as statutory minimum limits may not be sufficient for severe personal injury.
  2. Overlooking Workshop Binding (Werkstattbindung): Tariffs with workshop binding are up to 20% cheaper, but in the event of damage, you must have the car repaired at a partner workshop selected by the insurer. For leased or brand-new cars, this could void the manufacturer's warranty.
  3. Excluding Gross Negligence (Grobe Fahrlässigkeit): Ensure that the insurer waives the objection of gross negligence (Verzicht auf Einwand der groben Fahrlässigkeit). Only then will they pay if you accidentally run a red light, for instance.

When and How Can You Cancel Your German Car Insurance?

The standard cancellation date for most German car insurance contracts is November 30th, as the insurance period usually aligns with the calendar year and a one-month notice period applies. In addition, you have a special right of cancellation (Sonderkündigungsrecht) if:

  • The insurer increases the premium without improving benefits.
  • You register a new vehicle or sell your old car.
  • A claim has been processed and you wish to terminate the contract.
